Just get her the P1, she likes it…encourage that (yes, I’m asking you to be her “enabler” ) Trust me, if she can’t get it done in 8, she probably just can’t get it done. The EFMJ has a flat point and the Pow-R-Ball has a round nose design pretty much any pistol will function it.ĭon’t worry about magazine capacity.

Federal makes the EFMJ (expanding full metal jacket) round, and Cor Bon makes the Pow-R-Ball both are expanding bullets with full metal jacket. Us civilians have much less of a need for such things. But +P does penetrate walls, fences, cars, etc. Typically when it hits flesh, the bullet expands a smidge more, but penetrates a smidge less. And to be quite honest, +P only gives you greater barrier penetration, it doesn’t “stop” better, or make larger wounds.

Avoid NATO pressure or +P in a P-38, it will crack the locking block in short order. And if she likes it, then encourage her to buy one…trust me…she’ll want to shoot/handle/learn it more than most anything else you choose.ĭon’t sweat the hollow point thing, FMJ’s will work in a pinch if bullets are placed well there’s over a century of data to support this. She has been shooting before, but she has never owned any guns.įirst – The fact that you have a woman who likes the asthetic’s of the Walther P-38 is just OH-SO-COOL. 24 to start with, and then get the Walther. I like the P38 myself, but the mag is too small for me in comparison to a modern duty pistol, that and I'm not a 9mmPara fan.Īnyways, is there anything I need to know about post-WW2 Walther P38s and P1s? Also, I'm thinking that the same friend should get a Vz. To keep costs down, I think a post-WW2 P1 would be better for something to just shoot and have just in case its needed. The other option is the Browning Hi-Power Mark III in. And the modern duty pistols like the Glock and Beretta are all assault pistols. The other side of the reliable hollowpoint-feeding issue is that most older designs won't take kindly to hollowpoints. FMJ, HP, Frangible (no one mentioned that an 8 round box of frangible 9mm would be a fine mag to keep in the pistol when its home), LRN, they all go through flesh and bone, and if 8 shots isn't enough, then she has big problems. The hollowpoint issue is a good one, however when it comes down to shooting a bad guy, you keep squeezing the trigger until hes cold. I don't know what the Fed and my state of RI have coming. NY State just made the P1 illegal because it has an 8 round mag instead of 7 and is semi-auto. But my big concern is any Assault Weapon Ban or magazine cap that might come soon. I showed her the Beretta and shes ok with it.
